How Cermify detects it

  1. Compute the KDP barcode clear rectangle for the trim configuration.
  2. Test intersection against uploaded content boxes.
  3. Flag overlaps as C-BARCODE.
  4. Severity may elevate when collision is severe; treat as print-critical.

Automatic repair

Guided only. Automatically whitening the zone can destroy intentional backgrounds; move or clear content yourself with preview.

Manual fix

  1. Identify the barcode clear zone on the KDP template (back cover, typically lower right).
  2. Move text, logos, and busy art out of that rectangle.
  3. Leave a clean flat area (or KDP-allowed background) for the barcode.
  4. Re-export and confirm no content boxes intersect the zone.

Examples

Keep the KDP barcode clear zone free of content.

Incorrect

Back-cover badge rectangle intersects barcode zone
label: "Series logo"

Correct

Series logo moved above/aside clear zone
Barcode rectangle empty of competing art

FAQ

Does KDP always print its own barcode?

For standard paperbacks, KDP places a barcode in the reserved area. Keep that area clear unless you follow KDP's own barcode instructions.

Can I put my ISBN barcode elsewhere?

Follow current KDP cover guidelines. Colliding with their zone still fails this rule even if you supply another barcode.

Error or warning?

Reported as warning in-engine, but collisions can cause production issues—clear the zone before submitting.
